Pakistan ignores calls to increase duty on wet blue exports

The chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association, Khurshid Alam, has complained that a lack of government action over exports of wet blue from the Asian country will prove damaging for the tanning industry there.

Mr Alam said that the government had ignored calls from the tanning sector to increase duty on exports of wet blue from 25% to 50% in the new federal budget for the 2011–2012 financial year, announced on June 3. In a statement, he said exports of wet blue, just like exports of livestock, are depriving the local tanning industry of “precious raw material”.
