Leathergoods boost for Madagascar

03/06/2011
Exports of artisanal goods, including leathergoods, from Madagascar in the first four months of 2011 recorded a combined value equivalent to more than EUR 4.3 million.

Artisanal goods are an important part of the country's economy, so much so that the ministry of tourism is formally known as the ministry of tourism and handcrafts. The export figures for the January-April period come from a report this ministry issued in the capital, Antananarivo on June 3.

The figures have made the government optimistic about beating Madagascar's best-ever performance in exports of traditional crafts in 2009 when the full-year figure was EUR 11 million.

Along with goods made from silk and wood, leathergoods are one of the most important categories.

Government estimates put the number of artisanal goods producers on the island at 1.8 million, although the number registered with the authorities is around 250,000. Only 13% of these producers are believed to have access to export markets.

Antananarivo is to host an event marking World Crafts Day on June 10.
