Chinese industry to update upholstery leather standards

The existing standard has been in place since May 1997, since when, the major players acknowledge, the market has changed almost beyond recognition. A meeting of tanners involved in the production of leather for furniture took place in Jinjiang City in May.
Participants agreed that a new standard was required and that the new requirements should include make sure the leather is free from formaldehyde and other restricted substances, and has high levels of wear resistance. They said a new standard would help increase the quality of Chinese leather for furniture and make it more competitive in the global market.
