MLA will step up training in Indonesian abattoirs

The Australian livestock export industry has condemned poor practice brought to light by an Australian television programme at abattoirs in Indonesia. Australian media took great interest in evidence of poor conditions at Indonesian abattoirs because Australian cattle were being exported there for slaughter.

Footage of unacceptable slaughter practices has led to some politicians in Australian calling for a ban on exports of live cattle and for all Australian cattle to be slaughtered on home soil.

The chairman of Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), Don Heatley, said in a statement that the industry fully accepts there is much more work to do in Indonesia, and that the treatment depicted in the footage will not be tolerated by anyone in the industry. He said his organisation would “intensify training programmes” in Indonesia to improve practices in abattoirs there.
