Barbara Bui moves production back to Europe

French fashion brand Barbara Bui has moved part of the production of its trademark leather jackets and handbags back to Europe from Asia.

The company used to run a second line of cheaper products, but it now wants to focus on the upper end of the fashion market and it hopes that producing more of its goods in Europe will help it increase quality.

Deputy chief executive, Jean-Michel Lagarde, told the Reuters Global Luxury and Fashion Summit in Paris at the end of May: “We are currently in a wave of repatriation of our production even if that means higher costs. For example, we tried to make bags in Asia but the quality was not high enough.”

Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary are among the countries that Barbara Bui is considering as sourcing options. Mr Lagarde said having production there instead of Asia would make it easier for the company to have contact with its manufacturing partners, better quality control and a faster time to market.

Asian sourcing accounted for around 30% of Barbara Bui production two years ago. This has already reduced to around 15%.
