17th century gold leather wall hanging restored
After two years of cleaning and restoration work, a gold leather wall hanging in Schloss Vollrads (Castle Vollrads) is now complete.
For Gerd Weiss, president of the conservation authority, the work is “a very special case”. Such well-preserved wall tapestries from the 17th Century are rare, partly because they were so expensive to make, and partly because Schloss Vollrads, in a valley above Oestrich-Winkel, near Frankfurt, survived all military conflicts since it was constructed between 1680 and 1724.
Mr Weiss believes that the wallpaper is from the Netherlands. It graces the dining room of the mansion.
Financing the restoration cost EUR130 000, which was funded by the 160 members of the Society Vollrads, the State Conservation Office and the German Heritage Foundation.
