High hide prices are the saving grace

The J.J. Gómez co-operative in General Roca has told local media that slaughter numbers have fallen in the last nine months from around 1,600 head a month to just 600. The company said the situation was affecting every packer firm in Argentina.
However, a J.J. Gómez spokesperson, Felipe Gerbán, has said that record hide prices were helping to keep the operation going. His company is receiving around 200 pesos (just under $50) for each cattle hide, whereas a year ago, the prices were closer to 30 pesos (just over $7).
