Ethiopia: tanneries warned over treatment plant neglect

19/05/2011
Five tanneries are among a wide range of facilities to have come in for criticism in a recent report by the Addis Abeba Environmental Protection Authority.

Reviews of industrial facilities in the Ethiopian capital suggested that a number of tanneries in the region were falling short of making the best use of waste water treatment plants that the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has built there.

An officer of the inspection authority, Meseret Mengiste, told local media that the tanneries involved had failed to invest in the chemicals required to make the waste water treatment plants work properly. The tanneries have been ordered to improve their performance or face closure.
