Audi tops Chinese luxury cars table

The president of General Motors' China business, Kevin Wale, has said he accepts his company's Cadillac brand has a long way to go before catching up with European competitors at the luxury end of the Chinese car market.

Mr Wale was speaking to media in Detroit, the home of US-made cars, after an automotive industry analyst said that, for Chinese consumers, a luxury car means one made by a European brand, especially Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Audi had the top two slots in the list of the ten most popular luxury cars in China in 2010. Its A6L model sold more than 115,000 units in China last year and topped the list. Next came the A4L, which sold just over 58,000. BMW had four models in the top ten, and Mercedes-Benz three. The only non-European car in the list was the Lexus ES Series from Japan, which came fourth with sales of almost 29,000.

The entire Cadillac brand, with four models selling in China, achieved sales of 17,000.
