Leather exports from Pakistan fell 5.4% in April

Pakistan’s leather sector exports fell by 5.4% during the month of April 2011 to $89.4 million from $94.5 million in March 2011 on a month on month basis, but recorded a growth of 19.7% when compared with April 2010 on a year on year basis, according to data released by Federal Bureau of Statistics.

 

The breakdown showed that during April 2011 alone, the country exported finished leather worth $45 million, leathergoods $36.2 million and footwear $8.2 million compared to $38.6 million, $40.7 million and $15.2 million respectively in the previous month. This shows finished leather exports were up by 16.48%, but leathergoods fell by 11.04% and footwear 45.81% over March 2011.

 

But, on more positive note, Pakistan total exports of leather sector during first ten months of the current financial year (July-April 2010-11) rose by 25.6% to $897.8 million from $714.9 million in same period last year.

 

The breakdown showed that during the July-April 2010-11 period, the country exported 22 million square metres of finished leather at $359 million compared to 18.3 million square metres at $ 258.7 million in July-April 2009-10 – showing a growth of 20% and 38.8% in terms of quantity and value respectively.

 

The country exported leathergoods worth $447.3 million (which includes leather garments of $339.1 million, leather gloves of $95.6 million and other leathergoods of $12.6 million) compared to $377.1 million in the corresponding period last year – showing a growth of 18.6%. The country also exported 9.9 million pairs of footwear worth $91.4 million (which includes leather footwear exports worth $68.6 million, canvas footwear $300,000 million and other footwear $22.5 million) compared to a total of 9.7 million pairs at $79.1 million in the same period a year ago – showing an increase of 15.6%.
