Argentina: local authority invest in abattoir and tannery improvements

The northern Argentinean province of Santiago del Estero has offered funding to help the cattle slaughter and tanning industry in the village of Sumampa, near the provincial capital.

Provincial industry minister, Luis Gelid, went to the area in mid-May to hand over around $300,000 in total to pay for expansion of the local abattoir and to help a nearby tannery improve its effluent treatment plant.

“This region is experiencing growth in its cattle industry,” the minister said, “and because of its geographical location, we need the abattoir in Sumampa to have enough capacity to cope with levels of cattle slaughter here and in nearby Sol de Julio”.

Increased cattle slaughter will also mean increased hide processing, making it important for effluent treatment plants to be brought up to date.
