Leather art to be auctioned at Cannes
UK-based artist Mark Evans has created a large leather etching depicting shark jaws for the organisation Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ) to be auctioned at the Cannes Film Festival.
The so-called ‘knife-artist’ teamed up with APJ to produce the work, which he calls “RED - Furious Affection”.
Actress Milla Jovovich and filmmaker Paul Haggis will be hosting the APJ event at Cannes to raise money for schools in Haiti, which was devastated by a magnitude seven earthquake in January 2010.
Using several knives, Mark removed less than a tenth of a millimetre from the red leather surface – just enough to expose the varying tones of tanned suede beneath.
The process takes incredible patience and immense attention to detail and each piece can take several weeks or months to complete.
