Earthquake hits tanning town

One of Spain's principal leather production centres, the town of Lorca, was hit by a series of earthquakes on May 11.

The second earthquake in the series measured 5.1 on the Richter Scale and has caused nine fatalities in the town, with three other people still in a serious condition at the time of writing. In total, the emergency services treated 293 people for injuries.

According to the authorities, 80% of the buildings in Lorca have been affected by the main earthquake and the after-shocks that followed. At least nine tanneries are located in the town, as is drum manufacturer Olcina.

The Spanish Tanners' Federation, Acexpiel, told leatherbiz staff in its head office in Barcelona had tried to get through to colleagues in Lorca by phone, in the Murcia region in south-east Spain, in the course of May 12, but had been unable to make contact.
