Pakistan: customs officials seize wet blue consignment

29/04/2011
Pakistan Customs officials seized an export shipment of wet blue in April because of what the authorities called an incorrect declaration of the value of the consignment. The shipment arrived at the port of Karachi under invoice 786/GE/001 on April 14, 2011.

It weighed 18,410 kilos, but officials said the Pakistani tanner that produced and tried to export the hides had declared a value of $12,447 and duty of around $2,500. The authorities said this only 10% of the real value.

The Chairman of Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA), Khurshid Alam, told local media that the true value of the wet blue hides should have been higher, but he disputed the 10% claim. He said the correct value of the consignment would have been around $40,000 and that export duty should have been around $8,300.
