Packer denies hiving off hides

Uruguayan packer firm Carrasco has said that it is currently tanning 100% of the hides produced as a by-product of its meat business at its own tannery, Dofín EcoLeather, with no raw material becoming available at the moment for others in the leather industry.

Company president, José Costa, told local media that claims among tanning industry figures in the South American country that packer firms were shipping hides overseas were false as far as Carrasco was concerned. He said that hides from his company did go to customers in countries such as Germany, the US, China, Italy and Spain, but only after processing at the Dofín tannery.

He pointed out that, as things stand, even Dofín is experiencing a shortage of hides and that the tannery has had to lay off 40 of its 150 workers.

Reports in Uruguay say that, since the global economic downturn of 2008, the tanning sector there has lost around 2,500 jobs and that a shortage of affordable hides is preventing many companies from picking up the pace of their activities.
