Ambitious Vietnam needs to produce more leather

28/04/2011
The leather and footwear industry will be a key national export in Vietnam in 2020, according to a new development plan published by the ministry of industry and trade (MoIT).

By 2015 the ministry estimates earnings of $9.1 billion in export turnover from leather and footwear. MoIT hopes the turnover will increase to $14.5 billion in 2020 and $21 billion in 2025.

The Vietnam Leather and Footwear Association (Lefaso) has warned that the country will have to produce more leather on home soil to meet these targets, as the increased cost of imported raw materials is affecting this year's export targets.
