Bottega Veneta strikes gold with Vicenza workers

Luxury leathergoods brand Bottega Veneta has reached an agreement with the Veneto region in Italy to set up a co-operative in the city of Vicenza, close to the leather cluster of Arzignano, to retrain the city's skilled gold jewellers, mostly women, to become leathergoods artisans.

Ten years ago, there were more than 1,000 gold jewellery manufacturers in Vicenza, but more than half have closed down costing many jobs. Bottega Veneta agreed to work in partnership with the region to teach around 100 already skilled workers the secrets of the leather weaving that goes into its trademark handbags. This will help Bottega Veneta meet increasing demand for its label-free, expensive bags, without having to contemplate making its products in a new location.

Chief executive, Marco Bizzarri, recently told the Financial Times: "Made in Italy is an absolute must for us. Our customers expect it."
