Brazilian packers: the big get bigger

20/04/2011
Figures for 2010 show that Brazil’s three biggest packer firms, JBS, Marfrig and Minerva, had a combined share of 35.6% of the country’s entire slaughter. The corresponding figure for 2009 was only 21.8%. The figures clearly demonstrate the consolidation that has taken place in the Brazilian packer industry since the economic downturn of 2008.

Since 2008, at least ten packer companies have gone into administration in Brazil and others have had to merge to keep going.

Official statistics show that the country’s total slaughter in 2010 was close to 29.3 million head, up by 4.3% on the year before.
