The governor of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, Tarso Genro, told an audience of guests and dignitaries at the 2011 Fimec exhibition in Novo Hamburgo (April12–15) that he regarded himself also as “the governor of leather and footwear”.

Mr Genro said: “What we have in this region of Brazil is an industry that began with the arrival in the nineteenth century of immigrants from Germany and Italy. They began to make footwear in a spontaneous, artisan way. Now it’s an industry with its strict regulations and use of leading technology. I feel responsibility for the industry, as the governor of this state. I want to be the voice of Rio Grande do Sul; I want to take much more than just a passing interest in this industry.”
