Retirement challenge for Valextra

15/04/2011

The chief executive of luxury leathergoods brand Valextra, Emanuele Carminati Molina, has said that the imminent retirement of around 15 of its 60 leather craftspeople will force it to outsource some of its production to other Italian centres of excellence.

Mr Carminati Molina said Valextra product quality experts would oversee production at every turn and that manufacture of the companies bags and other leathergoods would only ever take place in Italy. But he said it was proving difficult to encourage young people to develop the necessary skills to replace those retiring. Young people today lack the necessary patience, he said.

In other developments, Valextra is preparing to take over a space that Prada used to have in Barney’s flagship store in New York. The company is also developing new product ranges for iPads and other portable electronic devices.
