Argentina to offer credit to livestock farmers

Argentina’s president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, has announced a new national livestock plan. The aim is to increase the country’s cattle population and will make more than $740 million available to farmers in the form of credits, which will attract interest of around 9%.

“Agriculture is the big challenge facing us,” the president said. “We want to have the most competitive agriculture sector in the world.”

Agriculture minister, Julián Domínguez, said Argentina had lost 14 million hectares of pasture land in recent years after farmers opted to grow crops rather than raise livestock.
