Australian luxury leathergoods designer wins London deal

Sydney-based leathergoods designer Rachael Ruddick has secured a deal to sell her latest collection of luxury handbags and accessories at Selfridges in London. The 72-piece leathergoods collection will go on sale there in July.

Ms Ruddick launched her own brand in 2008 because, she says, she felt the high quality of leather tanned in Australia from diverse locally sourced raw material deserved to make an impact in high-end fashion. Too much of the leathergoods sector in her native country was geared towards the tourist souvenir market, in her opinion.

Bags she has created incorporate exotic leather from crocodiles, parrot-fish and water snake.

Speaking about the Selfridges deal, she told the Sydney Morning Herald: "They loved our brand story, which is obviously unique in that we promote ourselves as an Australian accessories brand and we work with Australian leathers and that is what we hang our hat on.''
