Brazil: slaughter increased by 4.3% in 2010

06/04/2011
Brazil's national statistics department, IBGE, has announced that packers across the country slaughtered just over 29.2 million head of cattle in 2010, an increase of 4.3% compared to the year before.

October and December were the only months with a lower kill than the corresponding months in 2009, which meat industry commentators have attributed to a fall in beef consumption on the domestic market and to extra availability on the domestic market after smaller than expected exports.

Mato Grosso was the state with the highest slaughter stats, 14% of the national total, while the state of São Paulo had a 12.1% share and Mato Grosso do Sul 11.3%
