Tanzanian government ploughs cash into tannery regeneration plan

Tanzania’s government has provided 65 district councils with funding of around $850,000 aimed specifically at upgrading tanneries around the country.

A spokesman for the tanning sector in the Central Zone, Jacob Wasena, told local media about the funding after a recent two-day industry gathering. He said: “We want to see each district council implementing the project as per outlines given by the government, the money allocated for this implementation should not be diverted into other activities.”

He said the emphasis should be on improving hide quality, bearing in mind that it was possible in Tanzania for good quality skins to suffer severe damage during collection and delivery to tanneries.
