Hope for new tanneries in Tanzania

Tanzania’s government is determined to make more from its livestock population of 17 million head of cattle, the third largest in Africa after Ethiopia and Sudan.

Dr James Msekela, an official from the Tanzanian region of Dodoma, has told local media that the government is committed to work with international organisations to turn the country’s cattle into a major source of revenue. Dr Msekela said a new abattoir in Dodoma was helping his region develop its livestock industry, even though slaughter capacity is limited.

He added that he hoped tanneries for the processing of hides would follow. The quality of the raw material is an issue in Tanzania at the moment, he admitted, but said programmes to establish better animal husbandry and disease control would help the situation.

One of the steps the government wants to take is to encourage livestock farmers to favour the Mpwapwa breed of cattle, which is well adapted to local conditions.
