Italy: intense export focus for leather industry

22/03/2011
New analysis by Italy’s official statistics department, Istat, has revealed just how focused on export markets the country’s leather and leathergoods production industry is.

Figures for the period spanning 2009–2010 show that Italian manufacturing firms across all sectors had 7,745 overseas subsidiaries, generated revenues of EUR 190 billion and employ 845,000 people outside Italy.

Within this, Istat said that tanneries and leathergoods manufacturers had a greater focus on exports than any other manufacturing sector. Companies involved in producing leather or articles made from leather generated 82.4% of their income in export markets over the two-year period, while the figure for textile companies, in second place, was 71.8%.
