Another tannery fire in Jajmau

Ten days after the local small tanners’ association called for the authorities in the Indian city of Kanpur to set up a new fire station in the leather producing district of Jajmau, a blaze has broken out in another tannery there.

There are around 12 chemical storage sites and more than 400 tanneries in the area and in the past 12 months the city’s fire service has responded to 14 separate outbreaks of fire in leather production facilities. The nearest fire station is at Meerpur Cantt, five kilometres away and the quality of roads in the area makes fast access difficult.

Hafizur Rahman, president of the local small tanners association, has called on the authorities to set up a new fire station in Jajmau.

In the latest incident, fire broke out on the second floor of an unnamed tannery. There were no casualties and firefighters and tannery employees managed to douse the flames and prevented it from spreading further. The authorities said a short circuit was the cause of the fire.
