Spanish leathergoods brand Loewe has closed 15 of its 40 stores in Japan following the earthquake and tsunami that hit the Asian country on March 11.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the Madrid-based company's chief executive, Lisa Montague, said when asked about the impact of the disaster on her company's business in Japan: "For the moment we are most concerned for the safety of our people there and only time will tell. We have 40 stores and we decided to close 15 of them and for staff to stay at home."

Ms Montague took up her role at Loewe in 2009 after six years at UK brand Mulberry.
