PLGMEA says leather garments prices will have to rise

Pakistan’s leather garment industry has expressed concern at a government decision to impose a new levy on sales in the domestic market for the remainder of this financial year. The measure will come into force immediately and run until June 30.

The chairman of the Pakistan Leather Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PLGMEA), Fawad Ijaz Khan, said the cost of leather garments would have to go up. The new measure raises special excise duty from 1% to 2.5%, but the PLGMEA says this comes on top of a 15% surcharge on income tax, a 17% sales tax on plant and machinery and an increase of 2% in the power tariff the government has in place.
