Leather chemicals company in the clear

A court in southern Italy has cleared the senior management team at leather chemicals provider SilvaTeam from any involvement in an alleged financial fraud case.

The case came to light towards the end of last year after an investigation into a project SilvaTeam was engaged in. The project, which had won more than EUR25 million in funding from the Italian government, was aimed at bringing jobs and investment to Rende in Calabria.

SilvaTeam, based in the north of Italy, was to work with academics to revitalise a defunct chemical research facility in Rende, with work on tanning chemicals as part of the plan. The initial investigation said funding that the project had attracted from the public purse was unaccounted for.

A judge said on March 10 that it was clear SilvaTeam executives had played no part in any wrongdoing.
