Brazilian leather exports up in February

10/03/2011
The value of Brazil’s exports of hides and skins went up in February to $161.7 million, the country’s tanning industry association, CICB, has reported. This represents an increase of 15% compared to January 2011 and of 23% compared to February 2010. In volume terms, exports for the month reached 28,300 tonnes.

“Our hide exports for the first two months of the year had a value of $302.7 million,” said CICB president, Wolfgang Goerlich, “which is up by 29% on the same period in 2010 and by 104% compared to the first two months of 2009, but it’s still 16% below the levels achieved in 2008. The development of the leather sector here is being compromised by the ongoing over-valuation of our currency, the real, added to the cost of doing business in this country.”

In spite of this, Mr Goerlich said the tanning industry in Brazil is working hard to be as competitive as possible to make sure Brazilian leather remains  attractive in the international marketplace, especially in the sectors with the highest added value.
