Argentina: government will ensure sheepskin supply

Internal trade minister, Guillermo Moreno, led the meeting in Buenos Aires on March 8. Industry minister, Eduardo Bianchi, and representatives of companies across the sheepskin supply chain were also in attendance.
The group spent time agreeing that, depending on size, skins should have a value of between $7 and $12. Government representatives said they wanted to leave open the possibility of exporting sheepskins “as long as the needs of the domestic market are taken care of first so that the exports have no adverse effect on existing jobs”.
Around 1,200 jobs in Argentina are directly dependent on the sheepskin sector, the majority of them in Patagonia. Local tanners complained earlier in the year that they were unable to stay in business because of a lack of domestic raw material. Skins had been shipped abroad to satisfy the needs of Asian buyers, who were willing to pay prices beyond the means of local players.
