India aims for leather exports worth $8.5 billion by 2014

Jyotiraditya Scindia, India's minister of state for commerce and industry, has told Asia Times Online that the government is aiming for exports of $3.75 billion in the leather sector by 2010-2011 and hopes to take it to $8.5 billion by the end of 2013-14.

Mr Scindia is overseeing an expansion of India’s exports industry that aims to reach $500 billion by 2014.

“After a setback in later part of 2008 and early 2009, Indian exports are exhibiting robust growth,” he told the online newspaper. “We are maintaining a compound annual growth rate of over 20% in exports. This trend is likely to continue, and is encouraging us to fix more challenging targets.

“The 32.4% growth (year-to year) in exports to $20.6 billion in January 2011 is due to a combination of factors including pick-up of demand in Latin America and the USA, increasing competitiveness, greater market access, and diversification of exports both at the product level and in terms of markets.”
