Uruguay: tannery workers take to the streets

07/03/2011
A group of around 500 members of the Tannery Workers’ Union of Uruguay held a protest outside the Legislative Palace in Montevideo on March 4.

The trade union said it wanted to make clear to the government its unhappiness with the conditions being imposed on workers in tanneries across the country. In recent months, workers in various facilities have faced temporary lay-offs, with management teams saying a lack of affordable raw materials is the main reason.

Workers have received unemployment benefit during this downtime, at the rate of about half of their usual monthly salary. The Tannery Workers’ Union has claimed that these lay-off periods have become more frequent since Brazilian packers took control of a number of Uruguayan tanneries.
