Mato Grosso concerned about clandestine cattle slaughter

04/03/2011
The authorities in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso have complained that high rates of clandestine cattle slaughter are putting the future of the beef and livestock industry there at risk.

Official figures for 2010 show Mato Grosso’s cattle slaughter to have reached 4.3 million head, which the authorities say earned the state revenue of just over $3 billion. However, local official, Eder Moraes, has told local media that clandestine slaughter of cattle last year reached 2.5 million head. This is a reference to cattle slaughter away from registered abattoirs, which some operators carry out to avoid paying taxes.

Mr Moraes said the state government was determined to stamp the practice out because of the cost it represents to the economy and because of what he called “an unprecedented risk” to public health of meat reaching the shops through unofficial channels.
