Native American tanners bring traditional methods into new tannery

03/03/2011
Native American people from the Ponca Tribe have opened a tannery in Nebraska in which they will tan moose, deer, buffalo and, perhaps, bovine hides using ancient tribal methods.

A grant covered the cost of the building and equipment and the tannery, which will have a small production value, employs eight people at the moment.

Ancient tribal tanning methods include using liquors produced from the brain of the slaughtered animal. Some hides will come from meat companies, but most will be brought by local hunters.

Ponca tanners look for images and designs in the grain of the hide and use colour to emphasise whatever picture emerges.
