Number of Indonesian tanneries has halved in three years

The Indonesian Tanners Association, APKI, has reported that the number of tanneries operating in the country at the moment is 67, which is less than half of the total from three years ago.

In 2008, Indonesia had 155 tanneries in operation.

APKI chairman, Haryono Sutanto, told leatherbiz: “Most of those who have closed have taken the decision to do so because it had become too difficult to secure the raw material supply they needed, while margins have become smaller. A tannery takes a lot of investment, and they felt the returns were not there.”
