Paraguay: cattle herd should reach 13 million head this year

Leader of the association, Mary Llorens, made the statement after a meeting with the country’s president, Fernando Lugo, in which she asked for greater efforts on the part of the government to promote the livestock sector in Paraguay, including appointing a permanent representative to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).
The meat industry contributed around $1 billion in export earnings in 2010, the second-biggest contributor after soya.
Currently, the cattle population of Paraguay is 12.5 million head, but Mary Llorens said she was confident the average annual growth rates of recently years, between 6% and 7%, would continue in 2011, taking the total past 13 million.
