Sheepskin prices create problems in Turkey
The scarcity and high prices of domestic raw sheepskins have created problems for Turkish tanners for the last three months.
The prices of available raw sheepskins for nappa-garment productions is over EUR7 per piece. Most tanneries cannot afford to buy, as they cannot sell their finished leathers to leather garment manufacturers.
As a result, there have been tannery closures in the Salihli, Kula, Usak and Biga regions.
The double-face tanners of Turkey are waiting on the new season prices of merino raw lamb and sheepskins from the supplier countries including Australia, the UK and Spain.
It is not known if the prices will drop down or not; the suggestion of industrial experts is to wait and see the reaction of the tanners.
