The governments of Ethiopia and India have signed an agreement for technical cooperation in the tanning sector. Under the agreement, India will provide technical expertise for the second phase of a technology upgrade programme at 11 tanneries in Ethiopia.

Director of India’s Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI), A.B. Mandal, said 30 experts from the organisation would provide these services.

Mr Mandal said the Ethiopia Government has approached the CLRI to ask for help with the upgrade programme, which will run for three years with total funding of $5.2 million. “It is an opportunity to demonstrate the capability of the institute on a global platform,” he said, and explained that the CLRI hoped to carry out a similar exercise in Sudan in future.
