Uruguayan hides in demand in China

Industry sources in Uruguay have reported strong demand and “good” (high) prices for local cattle hides in export markets at the moment.

Hide traders and packers have said interest in raw hides from Uruguay is at a high level from tanners around the world, but that 80% of exported hides are being shipped to China.

Daniel Cabrera, director of a company called Zelenco, has told local media that interest in Uruguayan hides had increased as 2010 went on and that 2011 had started with strong demand for and a considerable increase in the value of the raw material.

The price of cattle hides is higher than a year ago, he said, but there has also been a strong increase in the value of sheepskins. The skins are trading at between $3 and $6 at the moment, Mr Cabrera said.

He added: “Around 80% of exports are being sent to China and a lot of people in the industry are wondering what will happen if China stops buying, because as soon as China steps out of the market, prices will fall again.”
