Brazil predicts meat export growth of up to 10%

Brazil’s Association of Meat Exporting Companies, Abiec, has said it expects the country’s beef exports to grow by between 8% and 10% in 2011.

In 2010, the country’s beef exports had a value of $4.8 billion, up by 16% on the figure for 2009.

Abiec president, Antônio Jorge Camardelli, said: “Our aim is to strengthen our position in markets in which we already have good commercial relations, fight against restrictions that Brazilian packers might face in gaining access to markets such as China, and grow our sales in Morocco, Cuba and Iraq. We are also looking at markets that we believe have great potential, such as Turkey.”

Mr Camardelli’s reference to China is a reflection of recent recognition from the World Organisation for Animal Health that 13 agricultural communities in Mato Grosso do Sul should be allowed to export beef as they have successfully established a special vigilance zone to keep cattle free of foot and mouth disease.
