Why crocodile skins are like diamonds

Ethan Koh, a member of the tanning dynasty that owns and runs the Heng Long Leather Company in Singapore, has begun to make a name for himsef in the world of luxury leathergoods while studying in London.

Like Heng Long, Mr Koh specialises in exotic leather (crocodile, alligator, python and so on), turning it into bags. He is studying design at the University of the Arts in London, but has used his intimate knowledge of leather and the artisan bag-making skills he started to pick up at the age of 13 to complete a bag collection well in advance of completing his course.

“My fondest childhood memories are of being in the tannery,” he recently told UK media, who have taken a keen interest in Mr Koh since he launched a range of bags called Mayfair, after the exclusive part of London where he has set up home during his stay. “Working with crocodile skins is like dealing with diamonds. It’s all about the cut. I go with the characteristics of the skins and colours and bring them out. Different bags need different skin.”
