Residents must approve waste water deal for Prime Tanning purchase to go ahead

The proposed purchase of the Prime Tanning tannery in Hartland, Maine, could depend on the town’s residents accepting a higher rate of local tax, media in that region of the US have reported.

Residents have been invited to a town meeting in on February 12 to discuss a proposal from prospective buyer, Tasman Industries that use of the town’s wastewater treatment by the tannery should be on a cost-share basis.

Reports have suggested this would lead to a small increase in local property taxes, but that the deal to buy the Prime Tanning site as a going concern would be almost certain to go ahead if residents accept the deal. The tannery is the town’s most important employer, with 170 people working there.
