Live animal exports from Pakistan on the rise

Pakistan has exported more than 320,000 live animals to overseas countries since an open policy came in in May 2009.

The country’s minister for livestock and dairy development, Mir Humayun Aziz Kurd, said a total of 5,515 animals—1,260
cattle, 1,825 buffalo, and 2,430 goats and sheep—were exported in the year 2008–09, while in the year 2009–10 the export rose to 314,947 animals. In this year, Pakistan exported 69,180 cattle, 63,024 buffalo, 182,347 sheep and goats and 423 camels.

In addition, 6,976 animals were exported during the period through diplomatic channels, particularly to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, Afghanistan,
Oman and Bahrain.
