Sales of automotive leather in Germany almost doubled in 2010

Germany’s 35 tanners had a good year in 2010, according to the German Leather Federation (VDL).

After a difficult year in 2009, turnover increased by 30% to a combined total of around EUR 400 million. Automotive leather sales almost doubled compared to 2009.

VDL said that upholstery leather for the automotive and furniture markets account for around 70% of German leather production.

The organisation said the German tanning sector, which in 2010 employed a total of 2,500 people, enjoys several important advantages. One of these is the proximity of tanneries to high-quality raw materials, their access to the research and development laboratories of important leather chemical manufacturers, and the quality of education and training on offer at the Lederinstitut Gerberschule in Reutlingen.
