Leather seats last seven times longer

The vice-president for development and application at the Lanxess leather business unit, Dr Dietrich Tegtmeyer, shared the anecdote while speaking at a seminar at the India International Leather Fair in Chennai on February 1.
He chose sustainable leather management as the subject of his presentation and said that a member of the Lufthansa management team had told him the airline was having to re-do synthetic upholstery on aircraft seats after about four years, while it had been able to keep using seats with leather upholstery for up to 30 years.
“Tanners and their suppliers, including chemicals manufacturers, should work hard to make leather as long-lasting as possible,” Dr Tegtmeyer told the audience in Chennai. “And all of us should emphasise this as one of the qualities that makes leather such a sustainable material.”
