Industry incentives in Ethiopia

31/01/2011
Exports of manufactured goods from Ethiopia in the second half of 2010 registered an increase of 67% compared to the second half of 2009.

From July 2010 to December 2010, the country exported manufactured goods worth $79.4.

The Ethiopian government has identified leather as one of the main industry sectors that can help it reduce imports, create jobs and reduce the economy’s dependence on agriculture. It has said incentives such as 70% bank loans, cheap land for the construction of the factories and tax exemptions will be available to investors seeking to set up industrial activities in Ethiopia.

A dedicated department at the ministry of industry will follow up on investors’ projects and help bring them to fruition.

In the second half of last year, earnings from exports of leather and leathergoods increased by around 70% compared to the same period in 2009, reaching $40.5 million.
