A recent report (leatherbiz, January 27) on Argentina’s slaughter and livestock statistics from the country’s leather technologists and chemists society (AAQTIC), also includes information about the situation in South America as a whole.

Quoting the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the report says that recent slaughter levels across the continent have been around 68 million head a year, with Brazil accounting for 40 million annually, Argentina (at least until 2010) for more than 13 million, followed by Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela. Slaughter figures from the rest of the countries in South America are very small, AAQTIC said.

It went on to say that, across the world, total beef production amounted to 65 million tonnes in 2010, a decline of around 1% compared to the global figure for 2009. AAQTIC said that Argentina, whose slaughter for 2010 looks to have dropped to between 11.7 million and 11.8 million head, is largely responsible for the drop in global beef production last year.
