Northampton to reach out globally, but slim down full-time leather courses
28/01/2011
There will also be investment in new leather research facilities at the university, but the portfolio of traditional, full-time courses in leather technology on the university campus will be “slimmed down”.
Courses will be delivered in collaboration with key strategic partners around the world allowing students to gain a University of Northampton qualification in their home country. Agreements are already in place with the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan, and the Associazione Culturale Olga Fiorini in Milan. Negotiations are also under way with institutions in India, China and Brazil.
A new research laboratory at the Institute for Creative Leather Technologies will be created during summer 2011. This follows a recent investment of £800,000 to upgrade the small tannery on the site and the public areas of the Leathersellers’ Centre (co-funded by the University and the Leathersellers’ Company in London).
On announcing the development, the university said the new flexibility would make Northampton courses and qualifications much more accessible to people already working in the leather industry around the world.
